NOTE: we have been playing Tripoley at our house for years (over a decade). We have our OWN set of rules! (yes, the do not match the videos online that show how to play).
Everyone gets two racks of poker chips of the color of their choice (we have over 10 colors)
To start a hand, everyone puts one chip of their color on each of the spots on the tripoley board.
Then deal ALL the cards out including one extra (dummy) hand. It is OK if some players have one more card than others because next hand the dealer shifts to the player to the left.
The dealer can choose to keep their hand and sell the dummy hand … or to swap their hand for the dummy hand.
2 of clubs goes first (if nobody has it … 3 of clubs)
Everyone follows suit until no one can play (which happens because some of the cards are in the dummy hand or the hand that was exchanged for it).
When no one can play the next card, the player who played the last card chooses the suit to play next – if a black suit had just been played, switch to a red suit. After choosing a suit, they they play their lowest card of that suit (not necessarily the lowest card of that color)
When you play the ace (highest card) you then switch suits to the opposite color.
If someone plays one of the HEART cards that are on the playing board (10 through Ace) they collect the chips for that card. Likewise if someone plays all three cards of any suit for 8,9,10.
The first player to have no card left gets the Kitty and no one plays any more cards. Everyone else must pay the person who just went out 1 chip for each card left in their hand.
Finally … see who has the best poker hand and that player gets the pot (there is no betting).
